Typology
Description Eight of the illustrated jars are described as `Central Gaulish ware' and assigned to Camulodunum type 102/262 (Potter and Trow 1988, Fig.47,19-23, Fig.51,80-82). A thin-section report on one of these vessels (Fig.47,19) by D.F.Williams ( ibid., 133) records `.. frequent flecks of mica, mostly muscovite with a little biotite, subangular grains of quartz, a scatter of colourless or pale green augite, a little brown hornblende and some plagioclase or potash felspar'. The parallel with Fabric 1 at Skeleton Green is noted and this too should probably be related to the `Standard Fabric' of Rigby and Freestone.

The report also includes a commentary on the Gaulish imports by V.Rigby and a tabulated comparison between the Central Gaulish imports at Skeleton Green and Braughing (Rigby in Potter and Trow 1988, 110-112, table 11). The table illustrates a number of the difficulties that have grown up in the British literature on these imports. Rigby draws an contrast between the Fabric 1/Standard Fabric and includes the moulded-rim jars of Cam.102, and a second group, here described as Fabric 2/Williams 1: rock tempered ware which comprises moulded-rim jars of the Cam. variety. Williams fabric 1 at Skeleton Green should be linked with the `Standard Fabric' rather than any `rock-tempered ware', which sounds more like a reference to our TF1. It is unclear from this exactly what Fabric 2 refers to.
