Site name Description
Bazoches-en-Dunois Unpublished examples recorded by A. Ferdière from excavations of a Roman villa, some with an incised shoulder. From the "Pannes" site there are further examples of le type Besançon, not otherwise described, but apparently associated with pottery described as "type Beauvray" and "gallo-belge".
Chartres Late La Tène occupation levels have been identified at Chartres and the amphora assemblage includes both Dressel 1a and 1b types (Villes ed. 1985, fig.39A,1-3, fig.39B,1-2). From the earliest levels on site `SXX' there are a number of vessels in TF1 including a large bowl[ (Fig.13,1) and an undecorated jar of our class 2 (Fig.13,2). An early Augustan date may be suggested for this material.

From Augustan and later levels there are jars of form C262 in TF1 (Fig.13,4) and TF2 (Fig.13,5-6) and finer wheel-thrown jars similar to C102 (Fig.13,7-8). There is also a fine example of a two-handled flagon (Fig.13,9) closely matching, at least in form, type F3b in the `Standard Fabric' of Rigby and Freestone (1986, Fig.1,F3b) - the ware appears similar to British examples but this has not been tested petrologically.

Dambron Ferdière illustrates three jars of form C262 from early Roman pits at `La Borde', Dambron. (Ferdière 1976, fig.2, 2,8-9) and described as coarse, micaceous and hand-made. These are associated with smaller finer wheel-thrown jars, similar to the C102 type ( ibid., fig.2, 10-11). The groups also contain samian from La Graufesenque, sherds of a vessel stamped by Ateius and a selection of fine terra nigra cups and plates. A Tiberian date seems most probable for these groups.

The assemblage from `La Fosse Dieppe' illustrated by Villes (1982) is predominantly coarser wares of middle or later La Tène date, but there is a small group of le type Besançon from the site. Villes' fig.13 illustrates nine moulded-rim jars in TF1 (nos. 1,2,4,5,7,8,9,11,13 - nos. 2 and 12 are the same vessel; samples B100, B101) and two in TF2 (nos. 6,14; B103). The TF1 jars are largely of the undecorated C262 form, but one (no.1) has a band of incised lines on the shoulder. Most of the other wares from Dambron, presumably relatively local in source, are brown or grey-brown in colour and tempered with quartz, calcite, chert (?) and calcite-rich clay pellets ( B106). Villes suggests that the moulded-rim jars belong to an early phase of the production but the absence of either class 1 or 2 might weigh against this.

La Chapelle-du-Noyer Unpublished information supplied to A. Ferdière.
Lumeau Examples of le type Besançon are recorded from the Lumeau "Domainville" site, apparently associated with South Gaulish sigillata and fine white wares of the "Allier Valley" type. A Tiberian or Claudian date is perhaps indicated by this combination.
